THE Beef Shorthorn breed returns to its Northern roots to hold its national show at the Great Yorkshire.

Enrties have poured in and stand at 108 – double last year’s show, and the highest number of any breed at Harrogate.

The Beef Shorthorn championship trophy is due to be presented by The Princess Royal, breed society patron.

The Great Yorkshire is also one of the qualifying events for the new Mohmar Trophy.

Featuring a bronze-sculptured Beef Shorthorn head, it honours the most successful herd across four shows.

The breed’s popularity at the Great Yorkshire mirrors the overall trend, which has seen registrations rise by 70 per cent and membership by 30 per cent over the past five years. It is proving popular with producers looking for a modern, functional suckler cow that is hardy and has the ability to forage.

Support from Morrisons’ Traditional Beef scheme has introduced a strong demand for Beef Shorthorn steers, previously a byproduct, and 98 per cent of carcases are meeting the multiple’s specification.
