A BROTHER and sister from Thirsk took the supreme commercial beef championship title at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Matthew and Clare Keel from Griffin Farm, York Road, Thirsk, won with Coco, a 15-month-old Limousin cross bullock which they bought at Leyburn mart’s Spring Spectacular in March.

Bred by Garrowby Estates, Coco was top commercial beef steer at the Great Yorkshire, before taking the overall title.

Weighing 506kg he was reserve champion at this year’s Northumberland County Show and steer champion at the North Yorkshire Show.

The Keel’s also plan to take him to Ryedale, Stokesley, Agri Expo, Countryside Live and the English Winter Fair.

The family started showing in 2009 and have won many championships at Thirsk Christmas fat stock sale. They also had the reserve supreme champion at the 2010 English Winter Fair where last year they had the champion and reserve British Blue bullocks.

Runner-up to Coco in both the beef steer and supreme commercial beef title at the Great Yorkshire was Vodka Bleu, a British Blue cross Limousin cross steer from Gordon and Julie Sedgewick, of Ricknall Grange, Ricknall Lane, Aycliffe.

He was commercial champion and reserve interbreed champion at this year’s Northumberland County Show.

The Sedgewicks are neighbours of Lucy Corner, 19, of Rye Close Farm, who took the British Blonde championship at the Great Yorkshire with Hallifield Hanoi, a two-year-old in-calf heifer and then went on to take the overall young handler championship title.
