THE forestry and agricultural sector’s major trade event returns to Northumberland next month for the first time in three years.

The Forestry and Firewood Fair will be at Meldon Park Estate, near Morpeth, on September 27, at the end of a week of forestry-related events.

Forestry is a major industry in the North where it employs more than 1,500 people and contributes more than £40m to the regional economy.

Organised by Northwoods, Northumberland County Council and Meldon Park, the fair features key industry speakers and stands aimed at forestry owners and workers, farmers and contractors from across the North-East, North- West and Yorkshire.

Visitors will also see what is happening at Meldon Park, where owner James Cookson has put a detailed forestry plan in place to make the best use of the estate’s woodland resources.

Andrew Kitching, project manager at Northwoods, said: “The last time we staged a Forestry and Firewood Fair in Northumberland in 2011, more than 900 people attended.

“This really is the key forum for anyone involved in the sector to find out about current developments, how to actively manage their woodland to maximise profits and what assistance is available for them to do so.”

The role of woodland management for farmers will form a key part of the proceedings.

There will be information on how forestry can be used as part of the New Environmental Land Management Scheme (NELMS).

There will also be information on the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), interactive displays, machinery demonstrations, information on dealing with forestry pests and diseases, and guidance for businesses.
