FARMERS in the Skipton area are invited to a meeting on some of the key issues facing grassland farmers.

Speakers at "The science behind better grass: Roots for the Future", include Dr Heather McCalman from IBERS Aberystwyth University. IBERS is a leading partner in the Sureroot project, developing grass and clover varieties with root systems which help alleviate flooding, tolerate drought, improve soil structure and enhance soil nutrient capture.

Dr Paul Hargreaves, grassland researcher at the SRUC Dairy Research and Innovation Centre at Crichton Royal Farm, Dumfries, has been studying the effects of soil compaction on grassland productivity and the cost:benefit of sward lifting and soil aeration, through a joint research project with DairyCo.

The event has been organised by the Upper Aire Habitat and Land Management Improvement Project. One of the project partners, the Yorkshire Farming and Wildlife Partnership, will provide an update on the free on-farm advice available through the project as well as possible grant schemes and funding.

The meeting is at Gargrave Village Hall on Tuesday, February 24, at 6p and will be followed by a free steak pie and pea supper. To book a place call or text 07827 975703.
