An appeal has been launched after several sheep were killed in a dog attack at a farm last weekend.

Cleveland Police are appealing for more information after grazing sheep were attacked at Handale Abbey Farm in Loftus on Sunday between 10am and 4pm.

Police have warned dog owners that they have a responsibility when walking their dogs near livestock to keep them on a lead and under control.

Force lead for Rural Crime, Chief Inspector Jon Hagen said: “This was a devastating incident for the farmer which was made even more distressing by the fact that many of the sheep were pregnant with lambs.

“We are now well into lambing season, and these type of attacks on livestock can have both financial and emotional effects on the farming community.

“We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful countryside but please be considerate of our rural communities. If you’re walking your dog near livestock, please keep them under control.”

They have also warned livestock worrying is a criminal offence and those found guilty of could be fined up to £1,000 and officers can seize dogs after particularly serious incidents.

Anyone with information about the incident in Loftus is asked to contact PC Stenson at Cleveland Police quoting reference number 056888.
