DARLINGTON Farmers Auction Mart (DFAM) held its inaugural young handlers super singles show and sale of prime lambs this week.

Organisers said judge on the day James Farrington of Roots Farm Shop, Northallerton, carried out his task “impeccably” as 21 under 18-year-olds presented 32 sheep to perfection before him.

The day’s champion and winner of £125 and the DFAM trophy was 14-year-old Matthew Dent of South Thornberry Farm, Bowes with his winner of the Texel Class.

The Reserve Championship and £75 was won by a Charollais sired lamb from 11-year-old Anna Herbert of West Shaws, Westwick.

The prize fund kindly accumulated from the host of sponsors saw a total of £600 awarded.

A £50 prize for the best showmanship also headed to South Thornberry with Matthew’s younger brother Callum Dent.

The £50 for best turned out sheep was won by five-year-old Freddie Dodsworth of Wodbrae Farm, Nenthead.
