The NFU’s North East livestock board is urging lamb producers across the region to get involved with this year’s Love Lamb Week, which continues until Monday, September 7.

Organised by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, the £1.44m lamb marketing campaign is designed to highlight the sustainable qualities lamb brings to the dinner table, emphasising lamb’s delicious flavour, environmental credentials and demonstrating how lamb can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

According to regional livestock chairman and Scarborough farmer, Will Terry, the week offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase the high animal welfare and environmental standards achieved by British sheep farmers, as well as favourite ways to cook a regional speciality.

He said: “We are immensely proud of the lamb we produce in this region, which is home to more than four million sheep. Completely at home on our rugged hills and lush lowland pastures, sheep are integral to livestock farming across Yorkshire and the North-East, producing a fantastic local speciality celebrated by chefs and home cooks alike.

“This year’s event is especially poignant as it also offers us the chance to celebrate the life of Northumberland member Rachel Lumley – the founder of the Love Lamb Week concept – who died suddenly in July, aged only 37.

“I hope to see farmers across the region seizing the opportunity to shout about what they do and make the 2020 Week the most successful ever.”

Now in its sixth year, Love Lamb Week has widespread industry support. This year the campaign offers a wealth of lamb guides, recipe images and colourful infographics for sharing on social media.

The NFU is encouraging lamb producers to make full use of these resources and has put together a guide to seven ways farmers can get involved.
