POLICE in Wensleydale are appealing to the public for help after a theft at Hawes.

On Tuesday night, just before 9pm officers attended reports of a collision at Moor Road, Askrigg. An unattended white Ford Transit was found damaged having been abandoned after colliding with a private house. The vehicle was travelling on false number plates and towing a trailer containing small excavator stolen from Appersett outside Hawes earlier that evening.

At just before 10pm the same evening, traffic officers stopped a red Vauxhall Astra in Leyburn Road, Catterick Garrison. Three occupants of the car, a woman and two men from County Durham, were arrested and remain in custody. Forensic enquiries are continuing.

Officers are appealing for any information in relation to the theft. Anyone with any information should ring 101.
