A MANUFACTURER based in Barnard Castle has won a national award.

S&A Fabrications Limited has been named as the Manufacturer of the Year (under £25m) at the Insider Made in North East Awards.

The awards celebrate the best and most innovative manufacturers in the region, and S&A, which designs, manufactures and erects steel-framed buildings throughout the UK from their base in Barnard Castle, took the award as the judges were impressed by it constantly looking to innovate and improve its products, as well as its commitment to never cut corners in order to save costs.

Simon Pelly, managing director of S&A, said it was a great honour to accept the award.

He said: "We work hard at S&A and at times we are really under pressure, especially in the last 12 months, having to find new working practices to deal with the pandemic. It’s therefore hugely satisfying to win an award like this, which recognises not only our passion for our industry, but also for the North-East where we’ve been based since we were formed in 1978.

"We’re very proud of our staff in all departments, who continue to push the business forward and ultimately helped us win this award.”

Simon and his business partner, Jonathan Kirk, took over the business in 2018 under a management buyout from the founders Geoff Simpson and John Allinson. Since then, the firm has invested heavily in new computer software, processes and a 384sq metre extension to their factory, to house new machinery and employs more than 40 staff.
