A TOWN is asking its residents for their views on how the future of transport should look.

The people of Middlesbrough are being asked for their views on the future of transport in the borough.

It's part of a long-term approach to ensuring the local transport network meets the needs and aspirations of the coming years and decades.

The Council's Local Implementation Plan (LIP) lays out a range of strategies in support of the authority's strategic objectives of People, Place and Business.

The LIP seeks to achieve a balance between the need for economic growth and and improvements that will minimise the impact of traffic growth on the borough.

The document - which supports the Tees Valley Combined Authority's Strategic Transport Plan - focuses on approaches that will influence travel choices, and opportunities to improve accessibility for all.

Key objectives include:

  • Reduce the number and severity of casualties
  • Minimise congestion and improve traffic flow
  • Improve local air quality
  • Remove transport as a barrier to accessing jobs, education and training, leisure and retail

Councillor Eric Polano, Middlesbrough Council's Executive member for Regeneration, said: "Great things are happening right across Middlesbrough, but if we're to make the most of them we need a transport network that's fit for the 21st century.

"We're creating thousands of new jobs, and building thousands of new homes, and great transport links will be crucial for everyone who lives and works here.

"The Local Implementation Plan sets out our approach, but it's vital that local people have their say on the document if it's to reflect their needs and priorities."

The consultation on the LIP runs until Friday, September 3, with a further report to be considered by the Council's Executive in due course.
