LONG-awaited roadworks are soon to start in one Herefordshire town after months of delays.

The closure of Corn Square in Leominster was originally scheduled to take place at Christmas, which proved unpopular, with a row breaking out after it was revealed that the roadworks would cancel Christmas events, while there were also fears they would hit Christmas trade.

At the time, north Herefordshire MP Sir Bill met with the Chief Executive of Herefordshire Council to discuss these concerns and subsequently the work was delayed until spring 2024.

And now the works in the town centre are imminent, with works starting once the May Fair leaves the town.

Sir Bill said he is delighted that work will now begin to improve streets and pavements in Leominster.

The work, which includes enhanced surfacing, improved paving, wider pavements and raised tables at the major junctions, is being paid for by the £1.3 million that Leominster received through the Government's funding for High Street Heritage Action Zones, designed to help local economic recovery.

It is due to start May 7 once the May Fair has departed and will be completed in September, with High Street, Iron Cross, Victoria Street and Corn Street all to be spruced up.

Sir Bill said: “I am excited to see the positive impact of the resurfacing which will make our town centre safer and more accessible for pedestrians and road users alike.

"This was scheduled to take place at Christmas last year but thankfully the council listened to my concerns and delayed the closure of Corn Square.

"I am looking forward to seeing road improvements such as this to be rolled out across Herefordshire following the Governments recent allocation of over £207 million to Herefordshire’s roads and transport infrastructure.”
