Harrison and Hetherington has completed its £1m development and the new livestock building at its flagship Borderway Mart in Carlisle.

Delivered by Cumbrian construction specialists Thomas Armstrong Group, the project includes a 2000-square-metre double-span roof designed to enhance livestock welfare, auction operations, and overall efficiency.

Its higher and wider design improves air circulation, allows more natural light, and creates increased space to support the mart’s growing throughput and evolving needs.

“This is a significant milestone for Harrison and Hetherington as we continue to raise the bar in market infrastructure and for the entire livestock industry we serve,” said Laura Millar, director of strategy at Harrison and Hetherington and project lead.

The expansion comes as Borderway handles record volumes, with weekly sales seeing thousands of cattle and sheep pass through its rings and more than £250m in livestock traded annually.

Robin Anderson, managing director of Harrison and Hetherington, added:

“This development progresses the market to the next level, improving animal flow, air quality, and customer experience.

“It also cements our long-term commitment to our clients, our community, and the livestock sector at large.”
